Pam Morris Wins Lee Tri-Hard Trophy

The committee received 10 individual nominations from club members for the award but felt that Pam’s efforts over the past 12 months stood out.

Congratulations to all of those who were nominated for a variety of reasons and thanks to club members for taking the time to vote.

Details of what people said about the nominees can be found below.

The pot luck dinner was preceded by our mid-winter Christmas event a Rogaine race organised by Andrew Cave.  Thanks for everyone who took part but special thanks to Andrew for making a beautiful Saturday afternoon great fun.  To those who didn’t attend you don’t know what you missed!!!!!

The next event with a good club attendance will take place on Sunday 8th August 2010 at the Pukekohoe race track for the North Island Duathlon Champs.

Anyone who has not yet put their hands up for the team shout now – the committee is paying for your entry so there’s no excuse!

For more details contact Mr President.

1. Pam Morris –

“A couple of years ago she couldn't even swim.  This year she has competed at the long distance world champs and qualified for Kona after knocking almost 3 hrs off her previous time.  That shows what hard work and determination can do.  She is also always involved in the club, taking spin class and in the committee.”

“Pam made her Ironman comeback after a skipped year and after securing a 7th place at the World Long Distance champs in Perth.  After a mind numbing swim regime over the winter, she tackled her 2nd Ironman with guts, determination and total belief in herself (along with the ravings and lectures from her coach) and took a massive 20mins off her Ironman swim time.  This is a massive feat in itself, to be coming out of the water near other clubbies when in training she struggles at the back of the pack.  A huge achievement which put her is a good position to cycle and run herself into SECOND place and a Kona spot AND taking nearly 3hrs off her Ironman time!!”

2. Jenny Hall –

“My vote goes to Jenny Hall.  No contest.  She exemplifies all the qualities listed below.”

“I nominate Jenny Hall because:

*  Determined to progress to the level of Ironman endurance;

*  Managed to put in the training hours despite a young family and job;

* A wonderful encouragement to others who have faced obesity;

* Attempted and completed the Ironman event with obvious enjoyment.”

 3. Heather Allison–

 Despite her foot injury she continues to attempt to get out there and keep working on returning to triathlons.  She has tried all options to heal the injury (it's even been prayed over)  and despite turning to the dark world of mosaics she still makes regular attempts to get back on the bike and test how far she can run.  Even when these attempts fail, before long she is out there pushing herself to test if she can make it a bit further the next time.

Throughout all of this, she remains positive and reminds us all to get out there, work hard and of course "enjoy the view".

Let’s hope her next attempt works and she manages to qualify for Vegas at POT

4.Nick Pearce –

“For completing the world champs with a stress fracture - pretty gutsy stuff!”

 5. Annette Lee–

“I don't know many of the clubbies that well.  I've seen you take on lotsa challenges, do new things (like your sports

documentaries stuff, commentating, coaching etc etc) to push others and yourself, you don't give up and haven't let us give up at swimming (who'd have believed we'd be kicking 750m in a session a year ago!!!)

 6. Ali Boggs –

 I'm going to nominate Ali.  She fits all the criteria for the trophy. She always means well, and the club wouldn't be what it is to some without her.

I’d like to nominate Ali because she’s had a lot of trouble this year.

7. Peter Melling –

“Pete competed in his first half Ironman this year after only a year of swimming - he rocked the club in an incredible swim exiting the water in Tauranga ahead of most clubbies, with only 1 in front of him I think - and it was an awful swim with massive currents and chop.  Not only did he rock the club, but he rocked NZ's triathlon scene by placing 2nd in his age group, qualifying for the World Champs in Germany. Who the hell is Peter Melling? An exceptional result with a gritty and talented performance finishing in a very tidy 5hrs 30 I think (or even better?)”

8. Sheryl Ross –

I would like to nominate Sheryl for a number of reasons.  She is the quiet one amongst us and yet she’s as gusty as the noisiest in the club.  She sets herself personal goals and very rarely raves about them and more often than not achieves them in style.  She went back to POT after a disappointing race in 2009 and won herself selection for the World Champs.  And all the time she’s training and racing for herself she’s organising many fun events for the club whilst supporting Wayne in his races.  Sheryl more than fits ALL the criteria for the TriHard Trophy.

9. Paul Comerford –

Paul has put many many hours of time and effort into being a long term member of the tri club and when last year he had some rather serious health issues to face up to he never once complained.  Fortunately Paul has pulled through and despite heading towards his mid-60s and being tempted to slow down he’s just so glad to be alive and enjoying the sport, so much so he’s off to the Gold Coast to run a marathon.  Paul is another quietly supportive and encouraging member of the club who deserves this nomination.

10. Susan Lake

I’d like to nominate Susan because she has quite simply got stuck into the sport and the club.  She’s a good athlete who has upped the game in the last season completing two half ironman races and a marathon within five months in her first season in triathlon, but I think her biggest achievements have been in learning to love what she’s doing regardless of what a race delivers and to share her time and experiences with the club.
